It’s All Burning Down Around Us
Why aren’t we doing anything?
Apathy is our curse. Our drug of choice. We gladly avert our eyes as the world slowly burns down around us. We see but have blinded ourselves to the pain around us. We retreat into the icy stillness that is apathy.
Sometimes, we can’t help but be pulled from our numbness. The cold in our veins replaced by burning, searing pain. We scream in agony, not just for the victims but for ourselves as well. We’re not happy where we are. We wish for something, anything to be done.
We can only weather through our own pain for so long. Even as we scream for change, we slowly begin to pull back into ourselves. We hide from the pain, knowing that this is only temporary but at least we won’t have to feel it endlessly. We may be pulled out again when the cycle repeats itself but that’s a problem for the future.
Nothing gets done. The cycle repeats itself endlessly. We can’t sustain the outrage, not long enough to end the cycle.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We just have to brave the fire long enough to put it out. We must resist the urge to bury our empathy, to submerge ourselves in soothing apathy.
If we want better, we must be better. There’s no other way to end the cycle.
